Week #2: Monday - COLOR PLAY & GERMS

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Now that I can pretty much expect we'll be home for a bit, I have outlined a clear documented plan for each day. Let's get started...

Toddler -

Lesson: Numbers & Counting

Theme: COLOR PLAY

Notes to keep in mind

Flash Cards: Do this sitting on the floor facing them. We want them to point to or hand us the cards we call out (if they can say it too, that's even better).

Our toddlers know much more than they are able to say. It's best to do flash card in the AM when minds are still fresh. Don't have flash cards, that's OK, you can make your own. Construction paper is great for this!

Language / Recognizing (listening & responding)

  • Color (Flash Cards)

Gross Motor (coordination, big movements)

  • Fallow the leader dance time (this can be in the form of dance)

Fine Motor (small movements typically w/hands)

  • Pom pom milk carton (as they use tips of fingers to press in, use word cues like, "put in blue")

  • Bumble bee color sorting (must use tips of fingers to pickup)

Arts & Crafts

  • Dot paints (discuss the colors & ask them to show each color)

Music & Reading (to help give the mind a study break)

  • Free dance

  • Book about colors

Crafting Notes: Chalk Paint =

Prepare this early in the week and freeze for a sunny day. To make, 1/4cup baking soda, 1/4cup cornstarch, 1/2 cup water, dab of liquid watercolor paint or food coloring (measurements do not have to be exact), mix well, poor into ice cube trays. Once frozen and ready to use (on a nice day), watch as they melt while drawing on the pavement. When they seem to be about done playing with it, squirt/spray with white vinegar for added fun and watch it bubble. The colors mixing together are really quite beautiful! (see our Friday activities to view the outcome)

NOTE: You gain a greater effect by keeping the colors closer together.

Not to worry, the liquid watercolor or food coloring WILL wash off of them. (You may want to bring a towel out with you.)

Friday's results...

(see "Week #2 - Friday" post)

PreK -

Lesson: Writing Skills & Inverse Lower Case Letters

Theme: GERMS (1st half of week focuses on our hands, 2nd half on our teeth)

Notes to keep in mind

- It's typically best to do more of the activity pages & flash cards in the AM when minds are still fresh. - Themed crafts can be useful for all ages, which is why keeping their lesson plans and themes incline with each other will everyone, especially you! Flash Cards: If you don't have flash cards, you can make your own using white paper

Language Arts & Writing

  • Practice our writing (upper & lower case ABC's)

Fine Motor

  • Tracing skills & proper pen grasp on paper

Science/Experiments & Math

  • Bread experiment (store in dark cool space, we will revisit this in 5-7 days)

Arts & Crafts

  • Clean & Dirty dot painting

Music & Reading (to help give the mind a study break)

  • Free Dance

  • Story from children's Highlights magazine

  • ABCMouse app

Creative Thinking

  • Finding Patterns (worksheet)

Crafting Notes: Bread Experiment =

Remove one piece of bread without using your hands, cut it into 3 sections, and pull out three Ziploc bags. Write on each bag as seen in picture. For the "Controlled" bag, use tongs to insert the bread without your hands, for the "Dirty" bag, let them place the bread in the bag with their hands, for the "Clean" bag, have them wash their hands and then place the last piece of bread in the bag. Store all bags in a cool dark space. We will check back on them in a few days.
